This was also the tribe that inhabited the
region of Paraty. According to a description of the time they were short,
had big bellies, flat feet and their complexion was not very dark. They used
a path to communicate with an upper village, which was located in the
Paraiba river valley. The famous goianá trail, future Gold trail.
1596 - Around October 25, Martim Correia de Sá, son of the governor of the
province of Rio de Janeiro, disembarks in Paraty and uses the old Indian
trail in an expedition to capture Indians, followed by 700 Portuguese and
2000 Indians.
1651 - A woman called Ignez Monteiro de Alvarenga (the Matron), goes from S.
Paulo to Rio by way of Paraty, accompanying her son, who was charged with
the murder of his wife and son-in-law.
1654 - In a rebel movement the inhabitants of Paraty, without legal
authorization, try to make the town independent, with the title of Village.
The General Magistrate João Velho de Azevedo stops them and returns the town
to the Jurisdiction of Ilha Grande (Angra dos Reis).
1660 - The General Governor of Brazil Salvador Correia de Sá e Benavide, son
of Martim Correia de Sá, ordered the trail opened for the use of Europeans
in August 21.
1667 - I February 28, by Royal Decree of king Afonso IV, Paraty becomes
independent from Angra dos Reis, with the name of 'Village of Our Lady of
Remedies of Paraty'. |
